Research Coordinator, AWdF

Updated: Feb 25, 2023

Between December 2021 and April 2022, I was employed as the Research Coordinator for the Atlantic Whale and Dolphin Foundation (AWdF) based on the south coast of Tenerife. As a volunteer centred project with a global scale, this foundation really is multi-national.

There are a number of pillar projects, some annual such as the London Eco Film Festival and the Earth Day Festival. Others are continuous such as the Plant a tree, fund a dream project and the marine mammal research project - which I oversee on the ground.

The research project is split up into 5 smaller research areas: Fin ID, datasheets, Acoustics, Land Based and Diving. Resident species in Tenerife include the Short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with 28 different migratory species passing through canarian waters at varying times of year.

The responsibilities of my job role and the contributions I have made to the organisation are listed below:

1. Weekly/monthly data reports and analysis

2. Teaching new volunteers how to collect field data and process it

3. Oversee all research areas acting as the on site lead

4. Write up monthylu/quarterly current and up to date papers and literature reviews

5. Analysing literature and working with volunteers to understand it

6. Beginning data analysis of ArcGIS

7. Developing methodologies and data sheets for Land based and diving projects

8. Contribute to the 10-day long EarthDay festival that takes place on the island

9. Combine research areas so that all data is accessible to virtual volunteers/graphic designers/students for analysis when requested

10. Update, collate and organise historical data on internal and external hard drives

December 2021 - April 2022
